We look for your sitemap the way crawlers do: check for a Sitemap: line in robots.txt first, then fall back to /sitemap.xml.
If it's a sitemap index, we follow up to 10 of the child sitemaps it references and count their combined URLs. Otherwise we count the sitemap's own entries directly.
We flag entries that aren't valid absolute URLs and warn if the total is over the 50,000-URL protocol limit. Nothing is stored — the check runs live each time.

What's the sitemap URL limit?
50,000 URLs per sitemap file, and 50 MB uncompressed. Sites over that limit need a sitemap index file pointing to multiple smaller sitemaps.
What's a sitemap index?
A sitemap.xml whose entries are other sitemaps instead of pages — common on large sites (e.g. /sitemap-posts.xml, /sitemap-products.xml). We follow one level of that nesting automatically.
What counts as a malformed entry?
A <loc> value that isn't a valid absolute URL (missing https://, for example). Crawlers typically skip these silently, which just means that page never gets discovered through the sitemap.
Does this check if each URL actually loads?
No — it validates the sitemap's structure, not each page's HTTP status. Checking thousands of URLs individually would be slow and isn't what this tool is for.
